Ravichandran Ashwin started his cricket career as a medium-fast bowler and a batsman who batted in the top order. He played for India Under-17 and Under-19 teams as a batsman. However, he later switched to off-spin bowling after being inspired by his idol, Anil Kumble. He made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in 2006 and soon established himself as a leading spinner in the domestic circuit.
